Addressing Our Emotions in Business

For those navigating the world of business, it’s essential to recognise a topic that, though often overlooked, significantly impacts our professional lives, our emotional well-being.

Extensive research into trauma and phobias has shown that individuals who express their difficult emotions experience markedly lower stress levels. Emotional expression isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a gateway to resilience.

Reflecting on my own early experiences, I often internalised emotions, especially during challenging times. Like many men, I equated strength with staying calm and composed, even when life felt chaotic. Instead of reaching out, I would retreat, trying to maintain control when what I really needed was support.

This tendency to suppress our feelings often follows us into the workplace. Fear of being perceived as vulnerable can prevent us from seeking help or even acknowledging the emotional toll life’s challenges can have. The consequences of this suppression are far-reaching, affecting our mental clarity, physical health, and ultimately, our professional performance.

Scientific studies increasingly point to a link between suppressed emotions and conditions such as anxiety, depression, and even serious illnesses. Our thoughts and emotions are deeply interconnected with our physical health, and when we ignore this connection, the effects ripple through every area of life.

In business, unprocessed negativity, especially emotions like anger or frustration, can directly influence the way we lead and interact. A business is a reflection of the person at the helm. A grounded, emotionally balanced leader fosters a positive workplace culture. Employees respond to authenticity and clarity. They are more engaged, more productive, and more likely to reflect back the confidence and self-respect their leader models.

Often, it’s personal pain, bereavement, divorce, illness, financial stress, that bleeds into our work environment. When we bury these emotions, we unwittingly carry them into meetings, decision-making, and interpersonal interactions. This emotional baggage can be mirrored back to us in strained relationships with colleagues, staff, or clients.

If you suspect you may be suppressing emotions, consider the following steps:

  • Reflect: Acknowledge whether you might be holding on to unresolved emotional pain and consider how this may be affecting your life and work.
  • Connect: Choose to share your thoughts with a trusted friend, mentor, or colleague. Talking openly can ease emotional tension.
  • Explore: If you’re facing persistent health or emotional challenges, consider whether expressing your thoughts might bring relief.
  • Reach out: If speaking about these topics feels difficult, I invite you to contact me for a confidential conversation. With nearly 30 years of experience as a counsellor and Master Energy Practitioner, I support individuals using practical and non-intrusive techniques to help release emotional burdens quickly and effectively.

Understanding what motivates us on a deeper level is also crucial. In my own journey, I originally identified service, purpose, and making a difference as key drivers. But deeper reflection revealed that personal growth, courage, and achievement were also fundamental motivators for me.

Unspoken pain can distort even our most positive intentions. Determination, when driven by unresolved emotions, can lead to burnout. I’ve worked with many business professionals who believed more effort and longer hours were the keys to success, only to find their health and personal lives deteriorating, ultimately harming their business.

Those who chose to address their emotional blocks experienced real change. They began working smarter, not harder. They found joy again, in their relationships, their work, and themselves. Their businesses became more profitable, and their lives more fulfilling.

Self-care, clarity of values, and emotional awareness are not luxuries, they are essentials. I encourage you to reflect on your top values. Are any crucial elements missing? Is unresolved emotional pain influencing how you show up in life and work?

Taking the time to align with your values and address lingering emotional challenges can transform your experience, not just as a business leader, but as a human being.
